Beauty: Seven Investment Purchases Worth the Splurge

Beauty: Seven Investment Purchases Worth the SplurgeWhen it comes to beauty products, there are days where I feel like I’ve tried it all. I know that is hardly the case, considering there are incredible (and not-so-incredible) products popping up on a daily basis. Throughout the years, I’ve tried a lot of very pricey products and potions that sadly, left me disappointed. Many that I’ve purchased myself and many that were kindly, sent to me by PR companies. In a lot of cases, if I’m not impressed, I’ll just keep quiet. Obviously, these opinions can be very subjective, but today Im sharing the seven “investment purchases” that in my opinion, are worth both the hype and the price tag.

Here Are Seven Investment Beauty Purchases Worth the Splurge

Augustinus Bader Rich Cream:

If you’re wondering if Augustinus Bader lives up to the hype, it’s an enthusiastic YES! Hands down the best cream I’ve ever used. My skin is forever spoiled and I wonder if anything will ever come close as far as creams go. I’ve written a full review here so if you’re curious about why, I encourage you to check it out.

Mason Pearson Brush:

It seems crazy to spend this kind of money on a “hair brush?!” However, I assure you it’s more than just a regular hairbrush. I’ve had my two Mason Pearson brushes (both the regular size and the pocket) for years. Considering it’s something you’ll use for the rest of your life, it’s entirely worth it, at least in my opinion. It helps in evenly distributing oil throughout your hair while stimulating the scalp (remember: a healthy scalp is the key to happier hair.) It’s my key to creating a smooth, sleek look for whenever I wear my hair back. In short, I cannot live without it! I actually ended up buying the pocket mini when I was in California when realized I forgot my regular size back in NYC. I just couldn’t be without it!

Yves Durif Vented Hairbrush:

I haven’t tried anything that combs out my wet hair better than this magical tool. Again, it’s hard to entirely pinpoint why it works so well but it does. It never snags and gets out any & all tangles with such ease. The vented feature is also great at speeding up my blowdrying time!

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation:

I’m not the biggest foundation person, as I find most of them to make my skin look worse than better. Many of the foundations I’ve tried, even the ones deemed “light to medium coverage,” settle into my pores and make me feel like I look older & a bit tired. Out all of the dozens that I’ve tried, there have been a few gems in the bunch but none quite like this one from Armani. This one does exactly what the name suggests; it makes my skin look luminous! The coverage is light but buildable, and my go-to for when I want a little something extra on the days I wear a bit more face makeup.

Biologique Recherche P50:

A full-size may cost close to $100 but for those of you who’ve been following me for sometime know, it’s one product I cannot live without. I won’t go into further detail since I’ve written numerous posts about P50 (here) but obviously had to add it to this list.

Vintner’s Daughter Active Botantical Serum:

By now, you’ve probably heard about Vintner’s Daughter. It’s just such a beautiful product and always seems to balance out my skin while leaving it feeling and looking so good. I’ve written a detailed post about it and after a few years of using it, it’s definitely become one of my favorite, splurge-worthy products. At night, I alternate between using the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream and Vintner’s Daughter , after toning. If you’re curious about trying it but don’t want to drop $185 for a bottle, there’s a smaller size you can start out with.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Perfume:

It’s hard to explain why I love this perfume so much but if I was forced to wear one fragrance for the rest of my life, this would have to be it. This smell is wildly intoxicating and whenever I wear it, I get compliments. I should also mention that I’m not one that gets compliments on many fragrances. You know how we all have that one friend that no matter what perfume they wear, they always smell so good? Probably something to do with how their body chemistry responds to smells. Sadly, that’s never been me but this is one of the few scents that never gives me a headache nor makes me nauseous, and always makes me think, “Boy, I really smell so good right now!”  The key notes are jasmine, saffron, cedarwood, & ambergris. I’ll mention that it’s very pricey but in my opinion, totally worth it.

Now I’m genuinely  curious: from these seven, what have you all tried? What have you loved and thought was worth the hype and on the flip side, is there something that you thought was overrated? Please share!

  • Mireia

I definitely have to try that Giorgio Armani foundation!

    Mireia from TGL

  • Afrisha

I tried the brush. Def worth the hype. Life changing.

  • janette

Your recos are spot on. I am currently using the BR P50 (and 70 also) – love this line and use other products as well, creams and serums. The MP brush is a must. Also love VD. I’ve used the GA foundation for number of years, recently switched to BB cream (Dark Panda by skin 79, I buy it in Europe not sure if available in the US) Don’t necessary like it more than GA but wanted a change and less coverage. I use LaMer during winter but would love to try AB. Look forward to trying the other products that you’ve recommended, especially the perfume. I’ve been devoted to Annik Goutal for ages – (more emotional attachement than anything else- great memories/times that happened when I was wearing the perfume, but I don’t really get too many compliments on it..so I am looking for something new. Thanks!

  • Janine

I have tried none of the products you are mentioning here, mainly because they really are a bit out of my price range, however, I do find these kind of posts super duper interesting! Between all these reviews, favorites and hauls, it’s really heard to keep an overview of what REALLY works for people, so I really appreciate you sharing these here.
    xx Janine

  • Emilia

I use the lotion p50 and Mason Pearson brush!! Love both and my kids won’t let me brush their hair with anything but the MP brush 😉 Would love to try the Rich Cream, Vitner’s Daughter and Skinceuticals, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet mainly due to cost 😉

  • Francine

    Hi Helena,

    Love these types of posts!

The Biologique P50 lives up to the hype 100%! A few other items (some splurgy, some not-so much) that live up to the hype are Elemis cleansing balm, Wander Beauty cream foundation stick, La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 sunscreen, Skinceuticals Vitamin C, prescription Retin-A and the Glo-Pro. All of these work as advertised and are can’t-live-without.

Big disappointments for me include the Armani foundation (sorry!), everything from The Ordinary, Colleen Rothschild Hydrating Mask (I think Lanege is much more effective) and TNS Serum, which did NOTHING for me.

Can’t wait to read what others say!

  • Erin

Love these posts! Cannot live without P50, I recently switched to the PIGM400 version and I like it even more. I also can’t live without their masque vivant. Also been using both hairbrushes for years. Can live without the Bader 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Andreia

I hate to spend a lot on cosmetics. However I use La Mer for face and I think it is worth $$$. I had tried many moisturizers before, cheaper or more expensive, but none is like La Mer

  • Myra

Not sold on the p50 bought the travel size to start almost done and I’m not sure I see any improvements in my skins texture or brightness.

  • Yp

Absolutely Mason Pearson! I received a regular size brush as a gift and will use it forever.
I tried and have heard raving reviews from colleagues (and everyone in fashion) about P50. I am personally very averse to the smell so had not been able to justify it as an investment myself.
I have tried a glycolic ‘dupe’ in the Glossier Solution – (its not a dupe by any means, but still a good chemical exfoliant without the smell I find unpleasant in BR’s P50, its fine for the price). I sneak a swipe of BR when I am at my mums, but have not grown to love it yet.

  • Scarlett

Thanks, great products Please all visit to luxury shop and see my Product lists. We offer variety of products.

  • Anne

I have never thought about buying good hairbrush or comb, it sounds so new for me, gotta buy one. Thank you for sharing these products.

  • Madalina Dorobantu

    Baccarat Rouge 540 is awesome!

  • Carly

MP brush is one that I found to be overrated! Maybe it’s just my hair? I have fine hair but tons of it, so I need something that digs through tangles. This seems to only comb out the top layer of my hair. On a positive note, you are convincing me on the vented brush (I hate combing through my mop of wet hair tangles!).

I love the Armani foundation, but beware that for some reason that bottle seems to explode on planes. Very messy… when I went to replace it, the Armani makeup artist mentioned this is a common occurrence.

Can’t wait to try the P50!

  • Linda

The perfume is amazing. Just don’t question it. Just buy it. Lol

  • Astrid

    Hi Elena,
I’m the typical blog victim, using nearly all of the products… 😉
P50 is a regular for some years now, but lately I alternate between this and PC AHA 5%. With my retinol regimen the BR seemed to be too strong to use every day (mornings).
I prefer a slight tint, but when it comes to foundations the LS is on top of the list. I also love the Shiseido Synchro Skin Glow which is sheerer and gives me more glow. I am using just a tiny bit.
I was never a big fan of the VD serum, but then I purchased the new VD essence and started a two week trial with it in combination with the oil… What can I say, I am still on it (started in June) and I have never been so enthusiastic about a product. My skin really really glows, feels hydrated and smooth and although I really did not believe in it I am a total convert! I even have the confidence to leave the house with no make up on – only once in a while though because I enjoy painting my face just too much…
On to the one product that truely disappointed me – the AB Rich Creme. Not only wasn’t it rich enough for my face (after using it for some time alone I had to use an additional product afterwards to keep my skin hydrated), I was not able to use the full amount of the bottles (I puchased two). The product split into a strange mixture of water and creme and I wasn’t comfortable to use it up. This mustn’t happen with a 225 Euro product whatsoever…
Anyways, I will look out for the brush now!

  • Chrys

I m so in love with the perfume and was happy to see that you wear it too!!
