I took most of last week off from posting, wanting to take some time off to spend it with my family. It was our first holiday as a family of three and even though Nate doesn’t understand anything just yet,  the holidays have never been so special. As always, I felt guilty for not being as active on the blog and on social media, but I had Keith remind me that it was okay to take a few days off.

One of my goals going into 2017 is to be more present. I’ve said it before, but nothing makes time go quicker than watching your baby grow up. We all kind of stand still in time (or so it seems), but watching a little person grow up at some a rapid pace is quite the reminder to live more in the moment. It’s amazing how much more I see or get done when I put my phone away for a bit.

Another one of my goals is to practice gratitude on a daily basis. I know I sound a bit Oprah-ish when I say that, but it’s pretty astonishing what that can do for the soul. I have one friend who is always in a good mood and not in one of those annoying ways, but in a way that makes you want to always be around him. One day during dinner, I asked him what his secret was and his response: “Every morning, as soon as I wake up, I write down five things I’m thankful for.” It seems so simple, almost too simple, but he assured me that in doing so, he started off each day on a positive note. You know the saying, positive attracts positive.

Enough of my rambling, but I just wanted to share those with you. I cannot thank you all enough for reading my blog, commenting, making me feel like I know some of you and allowing me to share parts of my life with you. You guys are the best!

xoxo,

Helena

    Happy New Year!

And yes, I agree. When you’re able to list all that you have to be grateful for it makes it a lot easier to go through the day with a smile on your face 🙂

We all know you have a little man to care for. I take the small gaps with stride as I’m fully aware that you need extra time in all areas of your life now, so please don’t feel guilty! I usually do my grateful round-up at night but I like you morning idea better.

Wrote this kind of quickly during a break, actually a small gap seems a bit off, a “brief prelude” would have been more appropriate as it also makes me more anxious for what’s to follow 🙂

Happy New Year, beautiful! I think it’s awesome that you spent quality time with your family over the holidays. I’m the same, I often need affirmation when taking breaks from work as well, as I tend to over work myself and feel guilty when I’m not working, but it’s what’s needed to replenish and truly live in the moment. Speaking of which, this is also something I’m looking to improve this year as well. As for your outfit, I adore that coat and it looks so good paired wit the grey turtleneck and dark blue denims; great styling as always! Thanks so much for sharing and I hope you have a wonderful start to your new year!

I read a lot of fashion blogs. But yours remains my personal favorite. Aesthetics aside (which are lovely btw), your writing is always sincere and relatable. Happy New Year!

Love your style and blog! Merry late Christmas and Happy New Year Helena! 🙂 Cheers, from Santa Barbara, CA

I do the same thing. I write down three things i’m grateful for, and there’s something about writing it down that makes it tangible and brings gratitude into existence in a whole different way.

Happy new year to you and yours.

Totally agree with the sentiment expressed. Too often we focus on what we don’t have and not what we have. I can guarantee that if you asked most individuals to list 20 things in their life that they are not happy with, they would rattle the 20 things off very easily. Do the reverse and ask them to list 20 things in their lives that they are happy with/thankful for and it takes individuals a longer time to do this (and they even struggle with it).
It is in the small, simple and free things that happiness is found. The love of family and friends, the compassion of others, the laughter of children, the curiosity and innocence of children, watching children at play, nature, the smell of flowers, walking through a forest, walking along the beach, the smell of salt air, the sounds of birds, sunrise, sunset, the smell after rain falls, trees blossoming in Spring, volunteering, caring for your loved ones, helping those less fortunate, showing tolerance and listening to those who share different points of view to your own, the smell of fresh bed linen, the smell of bread baking, hugs, a sleeping baby/child, the joy that you have been blessed with a healthy life and have lived to spend another day with those that you hold near and dear. Life brings difficult and hard things/times, but it also brings many good things. Sadly, we often have our eyes shut and don’t see them and we don’t strive (in small acts) to make our communities better. We are so busy living our own, separate lives that we forget that the strength of flourishing is dependent on a strong community. My goal for this year – to open my eyes and see and to engage in behaviour that is good and decent towards others and to this beautiful (but troubled Earth) that our gorgeous children will, in the near future, inherit.

      Hi Sel,

      I love this! You’re 100% right!

      Happy New Year! xo

  • Rach

Happy New Year! Glad you took time off. We all need to do it once in a while and being present is so important! Hope the new year is treating you well!

Yes, it’s definitely ‘OK’ to take time off to be with your family. Each Christmas I take four days off to go to the natural hot springs in British Columbia. No one is there and we have a chance to reconnect because all of the peripheral distractions are taken away. We are truly present with each other.
