Our Kitchen Runner + My Favorite Rug Shops

In my never ending pursuit of trying to finalize our kitchen, I was on the hunt for the perfect runner. I’ve been dying to get a vintage Turkish one, but knowing it was a risky move in terms of maintenance, I debated the choice for weeks. After finally deciding to take a risk and  go through with it, the hardest part was finding one that I loved! It had to be a certain length  (approximately 9″ x 2.5″) and flow with the rest of our home.

I ended up getting the  one in the above photo and as of now, I couldn’t be happier! It’s a vintage one from the 60’s and one-of-a-kind. I find that it really completes the look of our kitchen. We’ve had it for a few months and so far, no complaints. Talk to me in a year or so, but at the moment, it looks as good as the day we bought it home.

Whether it’s for your kitchen or another part of your home, here are some of my favorite vintage rug sites and shops, including one that sells rugs that are machine washable:

Legend Rug: After weeks of searching, I finally found our runner from here. So many beautiful options, like this one.

Urban Outfitters: I recently this rug for my closet and I could not be happier. I know that the 2 x 8 version would also make such a beautiful runner in a hallway or kitchen! Highly recommend.

Loom & Kiln: I first discovered them on Instagram after a friend, who knew I was on the hunt, tagged me in one of their photos. They have the most beautiful Instagram account and provide both beautiful choices and inspiration.

Kaya Kilims: To echo the above, I discovered them on Instagram and every other photo makes me want to swap out all of my rugs for vintage ones from Turkey. I mean, how stunning is this photo?!

Beniourain Carpets: Specializing in Moroccan rugs, they have an in incredible collection in every shape, size and color.

Rug & WeaveA husband and wife team that sources rugs from Turkey and Morocco, Mudcloth throws from Ghana and pillows from the villages of the Ivory Coast, you’ll find such a beautiful selection of handmade goods.

Ruggable: For our bathroom rug, I’ve been eyeing a few from here (like this one and this one), but still can’t decide whether we want to go bold in color or neutral. Either way, they have beautiful designs that you could actually throw in the washing machine.

Gray & Beige: This Etsy shop is based in Istanbul and specializes in handmade vintage, over-dyed Turkish rugs. Here’s a runner that looks similar to mine.

Arts Home Rug: Another Istanbul-based Etsy shop offering an assortment of Turkish, Oushak, Kilim, and Decorative rugs in various prints and colors.

Muse Collection Rugs: I went back and forth with the team and they were so wonderful in trying to help me source the type of rug that I wanted (even when I wasn’t sure myself). Based in NY & Toronto, they offer a beautifully curated collection.

The Oushak Shop: Based in Pittsboro, NC, this Etsy shop specializes in vintage handmade Turkish Oushak rugs in beautiful prints and light muted colors. I found a lot of them to look very similar to mine as well, especially this one.

Not wanting to overwhelm, I kept the list short and sweet, but all with fantastic options. If you’re on a rug hunt, good luck! I know it’s not an easy task.

Also, a full kitchen post with all details is coming soon! Promise. In the meantime sharing some of my favorite runners below. I loved all of these, but ultimately, settled on one.

Beautiful! Helena, do you do anything to the rug before bringing it home? I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage dining set and read that vintage upholstery should be cleaned thoroughly before bringing into your home.

      Hi!
We actually did not as it arrived looking brand new. Many shops will send the regs clean and ready to go, but it can’t hurt to shoot them an email to confirm!

  • Joanna

It’s a beautiful runner! Did you use stain protectant on it? It will keep your rug in a heavy use area looking new longer.

    • Helena

      Hi Joanna,

I didn’t even think of that – thank you! Do you have one you recommend?

      • Joanna

If it is wool and I expect it is the case, you need to use an “acid dye protectant” such as Stainmaster by DuPont. Many products in the kitchen will stain your lovely runner. It would be impossible to hide with such a light colour.

This is such a clever idea – looks super!!
