Urban Oasis

Keith and I are currently in the process of redoing our Brooklyn backyard, a process I’ve been sharing on instagram stories. Has anyone here been following along?

What I love about where we live is that it’s a mix of urban life – filled with cafes, restaurants, shops, but with such a neighborhood feel. Even with the neighborhood balance, I cannot wait to have our own little personal urban oasis. Our backyard isn’t sprawling by any means (however, considered big by Brooklyn standards), but filled with so much character and charm. It was one of the main reasons that I fell in love with our house.

In the meantime, these photos are serving as a major dose of inspiration! I’m so excited to be sharing the process with you all. For all of the behind-the-scenes, be sure to follow on instagram stories! I’ve been sharing a lot of it in real time.

xo,

Helena

I do love the inspiration. However, I have a questions. When designing your backyard space do you take into account the winter weather? How it can be used for winter? Thats one thing I am always concerned about!

    • Helena

      Hi Anisha,

We’ve definitely been thinking a lot about this! We want to be strategic with how we go about it, but also want to enjoy it as much as possible during the summer and fall months! Thinking that with our rugs, we’ll have to go the cheaper route so we’re able to replace every year – and cushions and pillows will be put away once winter comes. But like I said, still working out the kinks! xo

I’ve been following your backyard journey on instagram! I love the look of the string of lights overtop. Can’t wait to see it all finished!

ehh!! frankly, not impressed. this look is so overdone, and i see it on way too many blogs. There is no real authenticity in this, just looks like others are copying each other on who can look more urban with hanging string lights. Hope yours comes out better…

    • Helena

      Hey Jessica,

So sorry you feel that way! I actually happen to LOVE the lights, even if they lack authenticity. They just add so much in such an easy way! What can I say?! But these are just serving as doses of inspo. Definitely plan to put our own personal spin on it .

Ok this is making me want to re-do our entire patio!! So much inspo. Can’t wait to follow along!

So many fun styles! Anxious to see the end result! Would like to share an important tip; be “extra vigilant” regarding the type and amount of greenery! Some plants grow very quickly, some need regular care and too many of both will equal an overgrown, overcrowded, out-of-control garden. Worse, some can be toxic if eaten by an animal or small child.

All of them are lovely. 🙂
