March Spotlight: Drunk Elephant

Monthly Beauty Favorites, Drunk Elephant Products, Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

There’s no doubt that Drunk Elephant is one the best skincare brands I’ve tried in a very long time and there’s good reason it’s been getting so much hype.  Aside from the aesthetically pleasing packaging, the entire range is really excellent. While I don’t think there’s a single product I dislike, there are a few that particularly stand out for me. I’ve given a little review for each, but you can find my top favorites at the end. Monthly Beauty Favorites, Drunk Elephant Products, Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

Monthly Beauty Favorites, Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel, C-Firma Day Serum, Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

I really love this stuff. This serum is intended for night and refines and resurfaces skin to reveal a smoother and more radiant complexion. It’s a great solution for dullness & uneven texture, pores, and uneven skin tone.

I often get questions on how I use different products (like retinol and P50) in conjunction with something like this and the simple answer, I rotate my products. I’m not going to lie, I have a hard time answering that question because I always analyze what my skin needs that night. I don’t have one clear and consistent routine and I play around with quite a few products, something I know can get overwhelming for some. On a day I use this serum, I’ll generally do a double cleanse and then I might use a mild acid toner (like Pixi Glow tonic or a lighter P50 like P50W) and then layer this on top. After several minutes, I’ll apply an oil and a moisturizer.

B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel

I’ve been layering this under my SPF and moisturizer and my skin has really been loving the extra surge of moisture.  Basically, it’s an ultra-hydrating  gel that helps to deliver moisture throughout the day. Drunk Elephant describes it  “like a cool glass of water for your thirsty skin,” and I don’t disagree with that statement!

C-Firma Day Serum

Time and time again, we keep hearing that vitamin C is one of the most important ingredients we should have in our routine. It’s one of those ingredients that may not produce immediate results, but overtime (much like retinol) it’s been proven to do wonders as we age. I’ve tried many vitamin C serums and this one is in my top three! It melts into my skin and has an almost silky texture, without ever leaving me feeling greasy.

I tend to just apply in the mornings, right after cleansing. I lightly press two drops all over my face, neck and chest. I wait a few minutes for the product to absorb and then apply a drop of face oil, followed by my SPF.

Monthly Beauty Favorites, Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, Shaba Complex Eye Serum, Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial

Their #1 standout product that caused the industry to buzz and for people (like me) to really pay attention. This stuff is amazing and the closest thing to a quick, at-home facial. Babyfacial reveals greater clarity, improved skin texture and tone. It’s brilliantly created with every skin type in mind and gently resurfaces the skin as it exfoliates. If I had to pick one Drunk Elephant product to recommend, this one would be my pick!

Shaba Complex Eye Serum

Nice and lightweight, which I especially appreciate under makeup. It contains potent doses of black tea ferment and copper peptides that work together to support a firmer-looking appearance around the eyes. For night, I personally prefer something richer and creamier, but this one has its place for day.

Monthly Beauty Favorites, Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil, Lala Retro Whipped Cream, Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil

It’s no secret that I love a good face oil; I love it mixed with cream, at night or day, under makeup.  I even love a tiny drop mixed with my foundation. That little tip is my trick for looking luminous, but never overly done. There are several oils in my rotation, but this has to be one of my recent favorites. It absorbs beautifully and always gives my skin the nicest glow.

Lala Retro Whipped Cream

Lightweight and airy, this cream contains a blend of six rare African oils to recover and lock in intense moisture for hours after application. Much like their other products, it melts into the skin and layers beautifully with their other products.

In the end, If I had to pick my TOP favorites, they would be the Marula Face Oil, Babyfacial the C-Firma and the Glycolic Night Serum. The others I could probably live without, but I wouldn’t be mad at having any of these products in my everyday rotation.

YOU’VE GOT TO TRY THE NEW POLYPEPTIDE CREAM! I am a drunk elephant fanatic, and it’s become one of my top favorites.

    • Helena

ahhh, really?! It’s been on my radar so definitely going to pick this up!

  • Shannon Berkeley

A lot of their products seem to be mirror-images of Skinceuticals products. How do you think they compare?

    • Helena

      Hi Shannon,

Both amazing brands and clearly a fan of both, but I do think they each have their star players. For Skinceuticals, while I know they’re one of the first to put a vitamin C combo on the mainstream market, the Skinceutical formulations are pretty expensive compared to other brands that are just as good. I also LOVE the Drunk Elephant Oil, something Skinceuticals doesn’t have (at least, to my knowledge)

On the other hand, I think the Skinceuticals H.A Intensifier is incredible (I like it better than the Drunk Elephant Hydration Gel). Also, the Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Repair Cream is one of my favorites! Especially after a laser treatment or peel. I like the Drunk Elephant Whipped Cream, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy again. Someone above recommended their new polypeptide cream which I definitely plan to try next!

      Hope that helps!

Hi Helena! Can you tell a difference between SkinCeuticals C E and DE C Firma? I went through a bottle of C Firma and loved it but I wanted to see if the SkinCeuticals price tag really made a difference so I have been using that for the last 2 months. I don’t think I can tell a difference but maybe I need more time? What are your thoughts?

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but is this a partnered/sponsored/”products for free so say something good” post?? Im beginning to become disenchanted with so many bloggers/influencers I have followed since day one because I’m seeing more and more posts like this. I just need a disclaimer, before I purchase and spendmy money on these products that you rave about!! Thanks so much!!!

    • Helena

      Hi Jakie,

This is in no way a sponsored post. I also purchased these products with my own money and in this case, they were not gifted. I completely understand why you’re weary, but I guess it just boils down to whether or not you trust the person you follow.

I often share my favorite skincare brands and occasionally I’m lucky enough to be sponsored by my favorite brands, but I would never partner with a brand I don’t believe in. Even with gifting, I get lots of products sent to me and I’d say, more often than not, it’s not shared on social media because I won’t share something I’m not excited about.

Drunk Elephant just happens to be an excellent brand that I felt deserved its own post. In the future, if they ever want to partner with me – I will eagerly accept!! haha.

I hope this clears things up!

      xo,
      Helena

I’ve tried 5 of their products and I only recommend two of them. C-Firma Day Serum makes me break out, I hate it. I like the B-Hydra Intensive Gel and what’s crazy is that it works well as a primer as well for me. My absolute favorite is the Marula facial oil–feels good on and makes me glow. And I totally agree with you–so many posts are sponsored and we don’t really know who to trust.

I love the C-Firma and B-Hydra combo! I love that they have the littles that you can try out and it lasts for quite a while and that you can cocktail their products. I just wish it wasnt so expensive. Unfortunately, I will be having to turn to alternatives from KBeauty and the Ordinary.

  • Kelly

Hi Helena! You mentioned that their vitamin C serum was in your top 3. What are your other favorites?

    • Helena

      Hi Kelly,
Drunk Elephant, Skinceuticals CE Ferulic and PCA C-Quench!

  • Holly

Love that they are cruelty free too! Makes it even more worth it.

    • Helena

      Completely agree!

  • Maria

I had been searching for a good skincare line and I’m glad I read your post. I went to Sephora yesterday and purchased everything you recommended…the eye serum was out so they ordered it for me. However, you mentioned you prefer a creamier eye serum. What else do you use?

    • Helena

      Hi Maria!

I hope you love the line as much as I do! For eye cream, I love shiseido benefiance, and YSL Temps Majeur. The YSL is very expensive, but my favorite eye cream out there. I use it sparingly! For a cheaper alternative, I love Kiehl’s Avocado cream.

  • Alexa M Johnson

Their products are so good but i wish they were cheaper 🙁

  • Emma

Hi! Can you please describe your routine on nights when you use the babyfacial? Thanks!

    • Helena

      Hi Emma!

Sure thing. I’ll cleanse and apply Babyfacial for 20 min and follow up with a good dose of moisture. That’s really it! Babyfacial is pretty strong (yet gentle at the same time, if that makes sense…) so I like that product to be the star player for my night routine.

Typically, I follow with a cream/oil combo. For example, last night I used Drunk Elephant Marula oil layered with Huxley Anti-Gravity cream. Cream first, oil second.

  • Rachelle

So far I’ve been so happy with many of your reqs. I needed a new serum and theirs look so promising.

I loved reading this post and I just found out that Drunk Elephant is due to launch in the U.K. this year at my favourite store – Space NK. I cannot wait to try the products…

  • Alyssa

I’ve tried other C serums.bedore and it’s hard to describe but they make my makeup or moisturizer “pill” or get gummy on my face (gross, right?). Have you experienced this? Does the drink elephant one do this?

    • Kat

Completely agree with this. I am using Dennis Gross vit C and collagen serum in the AM and if I need to layer makeup on top I am having the same problem where it “rolls up” or pills. however if I just layer SPF or another serum on top its usually fine.

      • Helena

        Hi Alyssa & Kat,

Hmmm… that’s odd! That doesn’t really happen to me. I typically wash my face and then on dry skin, apply the vitamin C serum. I let it absorb and then apply my other products. I would try getting it from Sephora and if you’re unhappy with it, you could always return!

  • flavie

Do you suggest elephant luxury facial oil or Laura Mercier oil flawless skin oil ?

    • Helena

      Hi Flavie,

Hmm.. hard decision. I love rotating my oils and use both in my rotation, but if I had to pick, I’d go with the Drunk Elephant!

  • jum jum

    thank you good job

  • Rozi

I like this brand a lot, I think it’s one that’s actually worth the hype. Have you tried the SPF? ‘Im having such a hard time with SPF lately, everything makes me break out. Any recommendations?
Also love Skinceuticals CE Ferulic but it’s sooo expensive, the Durnk Elephant version I feel isn’t as potent as Skinceuticals but still very good. What are your thoughts on potency of these two?
